Today was a very strange day. It all started with the daily walk to the library. You know, that small little library that is downtown? My little brother, Everett, begged to come with me. Mother allowed him to come with me. The whole walk was frantic. Everett acted like an untrained dog. Chasing everything within reach, running into people, sticking his tongue out and panting like a beast. It was mortifying Anges. He did it the whole time. Children were laughing, especially the boys and young men. It was so embarrassing being the center of attention like that- and the more they laughed, the more Everett acted up. So I tried the only thing that would work, It should’ve worked.
“Won’t you boys be a dearie and stop laughing? My brother acts up even more when he gets attention, especially laughter!”
They laughed again saying things like, “Yes Mother” and “Mean Mommy”
I glared at them and kept walking, dragging little Everett down the street. I reckon we might even be in the newspaper, what a disgrace that little boy has cast upon us. We were almost at the library, soon the laughter would stop-once we got inside to be exact. Little Everett ran into the library, I raced in after him, not noticing it was closed. The Library was dark and quiet, I couldn’t see Everett anywhere. “Everett!” I shouted into the silence. No one answered. I shouted again. No answer. My heart beat. Faster. Faster. Faster. “Hello!” My voice echoed into the darkness. My little brother was gone, lost. Oh, Anges, I was so scared, I had thought my brother had disappeared, but he was right behind me.
I held him and carried him out of the abandoned library. I think I want to go there again! I mustn’t let Mother know, and I mustn’t let Everett come. Oh Anges, I wish you could come into the library with me! Well, I have to go now, Mother wants me to help her make dinner. Have a pleasant day, and don’t forget to right back.
